ds9 has GOTTA stop having episodes that make me cry. just watched Change of Heart for the first time and the ending obliterated me
i love it when a ds9 episode is just about something very human, and every arc is dedicated to exploring that feeling -- not forcing a resolution, but letting that feeling simply exist and be seen from all angles. this was a really good example of that
TYPES OF DS9 EPISODE:
- self-sealing stembolts -- A plot: a couple characters, usually Jake and Nog, have a wacky adventure; B plot: deep political stuff with wide-reaching implications (Progress, In the Cards)
- we have FEELINGS about WAR -- A plot: war shit happens. B plot: emotional shit related to the war. (Battle Lines, Nor the Battle to the Strong, Sacrifice of Angels)
- let's just make an amazing work of art -- when an episode goes so hard on its pitch it almost stops being star trek (Past Tense, The Visitor, Far Beyond the Stars)
- bajor, baby -- Let's do some shit with the PROPHETS (The Storyteller, Rapture, In the Hands of the Prophets)
- just some twilight zone shit (Second Sight, The Muse, Rivals, Meridian)
- a surprisingly tender and mature work of art (Change of Heart, House of Quark, The Wire, Life Support)
- fuck you, O'Brien (Whispers, Hard Time, Visionary, Tribunal)
