For those who don't remember (or, god forbid, were too young): in late March/early April of 2010 Microsoft had an exclusive deal with Netflix for a streaming application for a while, which is why the PS3 and Wii got discs as a sort of legal work around - it wasn't an "app" so it didn't violate whatever the terms of exclusivity there were there.

This was decidedly short-lived, however, as a standalone app was actually released in October of 2010.

Then in 2019 they shut the whole thing off. And thus ends the story of Netflix on the Wii.

But that means this disc is from a very specific ~6 month period in 2010.

Slightly confused. I seem to remember Netflix offering a Wii Shop Channel app? Did they just decide not to do that until later?

The app came later, yeah. There was a several month period where discs were the only option before the app arrived, I think. The PS3 also had a disc for a while, if I recall right

Fascinating - looking it up it appears the reason for the disc was either that Nintendo/Sony didn't want streaming apps in their console stores initially (both of them being the first console stores the companies had operated, I guess they were still figuring things out), or that Microsoft - who did have a Netflix app from day one on the 360 store - might have struck an app exclusivity agreement with Netflix that they loopholed around with the discs.

This reminds me of the time I somehow obtained that Netflix app through Skyward Sword. I put the disc in my Wii, and that somehow led to the Netflix app downloading itself to my Wii. It wasn’t connected to the Internet at the time, and it’s incredibly unlikely my Wii had downloaded it without my knowledge and only then chose to inform me, so I’ve always assumed that Netflix came inexplicably bundled with Skyward Sword.
