sliding scale salaries that came around with the generalization of remote work are really interesting in that they remove the pretention that salary is related to the work that you provide, and instead it's a stipend so you don't die and can keep working. within a category, of course. they typecast a job as belonging to a certain set of living standards, and then they give you the money that you get that living standard - but not more! you can't cheat the system by living somewhere where that money goes further! you get to attain this social class and that's it

also really funny that it was totally accepted before 2021 essentially, because the people who were doing that were either way too business critical, or executives. but once workers started wanting to do it, it was rolled back
