It is actually a diminutive of towel. Toilet used to be the name of the room before became the name of the... device lol I dunno what a toilet is, is it a mechanism? A fixture?
Anyway, the room was a toilet because it had toilets (towelettes) in it for cleaning yourself in general and similar to how we call it a bathroom or restroom instead of a pooproom, toilet was a euphamism.
