Today the Saeima approved 8 bills that establish "partnerships" as a legal concept. Essentially a civil union. A gender agnostic union. It's not exactly marriage equality, but after 20 years and 8 official attempts we finally have something for same sex couples.

It comes with inheritance rights, visitation rights, some tax deductions and exemptions. Pretty fucking cool!

The vote wasn't a massive margin, so the opposition is, of course, trying to overturn it. First by asking the president to not sign the changes into law – seemingly forgetting that the president is a) quite gay and b) on the record saying that this is an issue that had to be resolved already. They are also trying to initiate a referendum about the matter and legally it may still happen. But there's a decent chance that they don't reach enough support to initiate the referendum. And even if they do, there's a decent chance that they don't get the votes.

So thumbs held that nothing goes wrong!
