It is not a sword that shoots bullets. It is not a gun you can stab someone with. It is a sword that explodes when you pull the trigger.

dragoons are sick and this is why:

  1. spears are better than swords
  2. jump real high
  3. fight dragons
  4. LOOK like dragons
  5. kinda edgy but not FULLY edgy

Maybe they can stab, maybe they can inspire, but essentially it's saying "I could take another soldier capable of doing grievous harm... or I could use the slot on looking fancy" and any class that you can use to express your hubris is a good one.

This is cheating a bit, but I really miss the 4E Warlord. No magic, okay at fighting in a pinch, but really there to maximize the impact of everyone else in the party. Closest comparisons I can think of are Fire Emblem Dancers, and The Officer from Beam Saber.

Also, I love the Scoundrel in Scum and Villainy. All about getting yourself into incredibly dangerous situations because that's where you thrive.

Oh, and anyone that dual weilde a gun and a sword. Always good.

The 4E Warlord was such a cool concept! I love playing support classes and helping make everyone else feel cool in fights, and Warlord was a really good execution of the concept that fulfills a very popular flavor niche in RPGs, i.e. the team leader or tactician. I wish it had bubbled over into more games.

I second your Blue Mage! Tried to slip one into my tabletop game, but the party chose a luck manipulator job for the NPC it was potentially for.

Dancers: Visually distinct on a video game battlefield, perplexingly powerful, and a fun excuse at a tabletop for creating music playlists. Etrian Odyssey Dragoons: What if you gave someone a gun and instead of making them the damage dealer, also gave them a shield and allowed them to tank from the back-row? Thieves: Not rogues - thieves. Let me play a person who's only traits are they're kinda sneaky and incredibly resourceful, and turn me loose into a Rogue or NetHack style dungeon.

Hi! Here's the list of classes I plan on developing/converting to OSR, though I have a lot of sources yet to pillage:

  • Aberration (DanD wiki)
  • Blood Hunter (5e)
  • Chosen (Hackmaster)
  • Demigod (DanD wiki)
  • Factotum (3e)
  • Machinist (ACK)
  • Oracle (Pathfinder)
  • Puppeteer (in development)
  • Reliquarian (in development)
  • Shifter (Pathfinder)
  • Tager (Cthulhutech)
  • Voyageur (Pathfinder)
  • Warlord (4e)
  • Witch (Pathfinder)

There's a Pathfinder conversion for Final Fantasy (https://www.finalfantasyd20.com/) but I don't think JRPG classes mesh well with the OSR feel I'm shooting for.
