It's a little out of the news cycle, but I just had a thought.

You know how there was a moment when all the AI companies were like "you should ABSOLUTELY regulate us"?

The thought is that they want to be regulated like weapons (dangerous to enemies, powerful and sexy, permitted to exist because states want them), but should actually regulated like financial instruments (dangerous to the economy, mathy and lame, permitted to exist under the thinnest pretense of free enterprise).
