It promises exciting variety and depth but it gives you busywork. I've been trying to get back into it this week. And there's just SO MUCH in this game that ISN'T fun tactics challenges. You have gear with diablo style minor modifiers and matching 300-items-and-none-of-them-are-meaningfully-different-or-better. It has masteries, where you need a specific manual-type item, a bit of a functionally limitless currency and 3 types of available slots at the same time, to equip a dozen 10% modifiers (with hidden set bonuses). It has a friendship system where each character has a different parameters for gaining friendship points with others, but also after 30 hours I haven't even passed basic "friendly" with my closest ally. There's a fatigue system that basically just asks you to spend 10 coins (from your stash of 3000) after every mission.
It feels like the brainstorm adage of "all ideas are good ideas". And like, I like an in-depth system or 5. I play Aurora 4X for fun sometimes. But like, this game asks me to make 20 decisions for a character to have no directly noticable effect.
And the tactics game is just ok. It's doing cool things with action timers and how you can affect them up and down. But most of the time you can just run up your dudes, put down your damage and come out of it mostly unharmed.
