Only want the audio of a video?

yt-dlp "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ" --extract-audio --audio-format=mp3

Only want a bit of the video?

yt-dlp "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ" --download-sections="*1:10-1:15"

Only want some chapters of the video?

 yt-dlp "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ" --download-sections="intro-outro"

Want to record a stream at the best quality?

Just point yt-dlp to it, it'll handle it.

I'm sure there are plenty, yt-dlp and has a lot of options. And of course it works on basically anything at this point (assuming there's no DRM), it fucking rules.

'Jump Ahead' will supposedly offer to skip premium users to the part of the video that you actually came to watch (if there's a disproportionate level of viewtime around a specific moment or something like that). It's in experimental right now, but you can already access this capability by just using the SponsorBlock plugin/addon for your browser, regardless of Premium status.

Also, what assholes! What a shit move. Not just for the LLM usage (b/c jee wonder what data they used to train it??) but because, lol, you're paying for Youtube, here, skip the video and get right to the bit you want to watch.

Now, that might not seem so bad: why linger when you're not getting served ads?

Well, Youtube Premium pays out to creators based on views from Premium members. Not watch time, just views. Which also seems fine, right?

Except it pays out 55% of your subscription to channels, divvied up based on the total time spent watching a channel that month. So, if you use this feature... You're inherently going to be giving these channels less of your Premium.

And likely giving more of it to whatever the fuck 5hr looped bullshit Youtube decides to show you on autoplay after you fall asleep watching videos. Granted, a lot of it can be stufff you've watched or would watch, but fuck me, sometimes it LOVES to 'accidentally' slip in some totally unrelated 'because it's popular!' recommends in there, and that's fucking intentional.

They're just taking more control over what your money goes toward, couching it as a 'useful feature', and it fucking suuuucks.

I also saw an LLM function on a Youtube stream chat that was actually maybe useful, and it only made me more angry that if they can appeal to me, then they're likely swarming in users that think this is all a win. The feature summarised the current chat topics in a stream chat, making it really easy to get the gist of what was going on at the time in chat.

SUPER useful feature, obviously! Clearly also just a training step toward a greater processing of chat.

Fuck 'em.

InternetCommentEtiquette made an entire video complaining about a plug-in that people would report sponsored segments of videos to, so the plug-in would automatically skip that section for the next user who watches that video. He was annoyed because he puts a LOT of effort into making his sponsor segments entertaining, and people were skipping over them like it was another copy of the same ad read every YouTuber does for that sponsor. Now Youtube is going to let Premium viewers do that when they want, presumably like you said for monetization reasons? I can’t imagine any YouTubers being happy about this change once they start learning of it.
