my recent godot experimentation made me remember the first game engine i ever tried, which was when i was 11 and our IT teacher had us make short games about the concept of energy, and u were allowed to make it on scratch, which most of the kids had tried before, or alice.

I of course went with alice because unlike scratch, which i didnt have any experience with, was 3d and i loved the idea of making something 3d.

i was the only one that picked alice as the engine of choice for their project. which meant i was in uncharted territory since tutorials were scarce and i couldnt ask anyone for help with it, and also it looked so weird to navigate. I did end up making something, but it wasnt very good or much of a game, u could "drive" a car (more like tapping W repeatedly for it to move a distance every time) and steer, and there was a city. I am definitely glad godot is being a pleasant experience compared to this

i still have no idea if that program just sucked or if it was entirely just me being a newbie at things and having no idea what to do

going off that second screenshot i'm entirely sure it's an incomprehensible mess made by java programmers who have lost contact with the real world

"new Object(...)", "this.*", "one shots", "Class Hierarchy", "resource" are all horrible technical words that should not be near a beginners visual programming tool except in very specific and carefully managed circumstances

oh my god I remember having to use this in high school.

I still hold the program was terrible. I had some programming experience at the time and it was an absolute nightmare to figure out, to the point where it looking like Java turned me away from Java forever
