I wish for doing those mechjeb had an "inverse maneuver planner" function. Give it a delta-V and a goal, and it figures out (if the goal is possible) when and in which direction you must burn.
the way i tend to do it is to first find out when the transfer window is and hoow much d/v it'll take and just pick the best srb option (twr needs to be decently high to be accurate when you cant control the throttle) and if i need to i trim down the fuel level to get as close as possible to the expected transfer d/v
its important tho to make sure ur vehicle has some rcs or some other engine after the srb tho, because no matter how well you plan yooull always need to fine tune after the burn
