08th MS Team isn't one of my favorites overall but I do like the grimy, practical aesthetic the show has.
For kind of similar themes, the Kummen arc of VOTOMS (aired in the 80s) took a lot from the Vietnam War. And Flag (aired 2006) took from the War On Terror and has a very cynical view of military force.

There's some people who say the back half of the show isnt as good due to the director switch (due to the first one dying), but I have to disagree just for the sheer spectacle of the EZ-8 vs Gouf Custom fight.
All-timer. Also tbh I really like the juxtaposition of the heavier, "grounded" elements of the show with the intense anime melodrama.
