for work i am digging through a fairly expansive archive of international shakespeare performances assembled over the past decade and a half by academics who are broadminded in their accepted provenance, which means i'm seeing dozens of videos that start like this

the vast majority have been translated in one way or another into languages other than english and very few of them have subtitles! some are literally just 2 minute trailers ripped from youtube and others are full 4-hour VHS transfers of a Taiwanese adaptation of Hamlet. at a certain point quality escaped my purview and now i am mainly just looking for files that don't work anymore

having flashbacks to the college production of julius caesar my ex was in that had a stage like this, everyone except caesar was in togas. caesar was played by a woman in a white pantsuit. it was a 3/4ths stage and the crowd scene consisted of actors leaving the platform and yelling directly in the audience's face. the final scene, which i will never forget, had augustus sitting down at an office chair and spinning around to face the front of the desk. of course, because 2/3rds of the audience was watching from the side, they just saw a dude spin around halfway. this whole production lives in my head rent-free. anyway i love to see geometry shakespeare

Subtlety absolutely for cowards sometimes. I still remember a version of The Tempest I saw which was in the frozen arctic, with a giant radar beacon dial thing on the backdrop for the sea scenes - and Ariel comes out of a whale/seal(?) carcass. You know. as you do.
