i have not played IRL mahjong in so long, there's even a weekly club that plays at an anime store around here but every time i think about going i remember they're all so serious about it, almost no talk about anything but how each hand plays out afterwards and as someone who has only played for a few years as an amateur it's kind of unapproachable, like dude you're not gambling at a parlor, open up a bit
