Reading the discourse on Diablo IV. Are we really still taking games this seriously? Also, for the Sorcerer complaints, sure, they got more squishy. They also got a malignant heart that essentially increases your damage output by 36% in two button presses. I’m straight up melting mofos

Given that the game is built to be monetized and every change to the balance of the game can potentially drive impatient players to regretfully or impulsively purchase microtransactions, every patch should be scrutinized. I think brushing it off as "taking it too seriously" is unwarranted.

But the micro transactions don’t address anything gameplay wise. They’re all cosmetics. Also, I would argue paying money for an advantage in a game (which currently isn’t possible in D4) falls under the definition of “taking it too seriously.”

Cosmetics are worth a lot to players. If they aren't getting the loot they desire via normal gameplay (whether because of an uncharitable drop rate or slower leveling) then they'll cynically pump dopamine into their brains via the Battle Pass. These should always feel very secondary to the experience, rather than necessary to enjoy.

Corporate greed needs to be kept in check, and rollbacks of less than ideal patches wouldn't happen without blowback.

But neither of those issues comes into play here. There is absolutely nothing in the premium season pass that addresses the complaints people had about the patch. It had nothing to do with gear, and everything to do with percentage decreases or increases.

There was no "corporate greed" involved. It's pretty clear what happened. The idea behind the game in general was to make it so you could build a character how you see fit. A couple weeks in, it became clear specific builds were better. This patch nerfed those builds, but it didn't fully buff others. The devs have acknowledged there's work to do. It's basically the same series of ups and downs that have existed since Ultima Online, but every time a new game comes out, it's like we're getting our first look at the telephone. Of course it's not going to be as dialed in as the game that came out 10 years ago, it came out 6 weeks ago. People just need to chill out

Yeah, it's literally just "x resistance dropped by 30%" but at the same time you get an item that can crank up your damage by 30%. I truly don't understand the controversy. The monetization side is super low key, and the game is so zoomed out that cosmetics are pointless anyways. The whole marketing cycle for this game has been weird. They're calling it "live service" like it's a new concept, but it's essentially the same approach as D3. Just, um, better
