You can choose one person over the other but you can take the longer route so far it seems and make both people kinda happy and you don't get unique/exclusive quests and lock off other quests based on who you help and how you help them.

Maybe that changes lster but I am having fun so far. The fights feel much better and more intresting then what I tried in Divinty Original sin 2. I do worry that the companion characters get old kinda quick later. Would be a big shame if so since Divinity Original Sin 2 has 3 or so very consisently entertaining companions throughout

Keep going. Not sure how far you are, but there are some cases where you don't even realize you made a decision that's going to have an impact. I can think of a few that have already had pretty big ramifications (I'm a decent ways into Act 1). Will even more in my next, "asshole" playthrough
