So we’ve established I didn’t like Oppenheimer, but still, how the FUCK did it beat out Poor Things for Best Picture?! Just finished it, and I’ve never seen anything remotely like this movie. So goddamn good

So Oppenheimer, in my opinion, is basically an overrated biopic with a few cool effects, but it falls victim to the classic Nolan issue of bringing up sensitive topics but not saying anything about them (i.e. the whole Patriot Act thing from Dark Knight, where there's a throwaway line from Lucius about it being bad, but it also saves the day). In this case, it's McCarthyism. Sure, the movie calls it bad, but that's it. Good Night and Good Luck basically delivered the exact same message, in a better way and with more application to modern day, in less than 2 hours.

But, again, I'm rough on Oppenheimer. Because I don't like it. I still highly recommend you watch it because I'm clearly in the minority.

But Poor Things? GodDAMN was that movie amazing. And that's just on the face value screening, I'm sure there's a lot I missed. Emma Stone is obviously fantastic, but I feel like no one's giving Ruffalo and Dafoe enough credit. Especially Ruffalo. He plays against type here in a way that is absolutely astounding. And Dafoe is absolutely amazing as essentially an elderly Dr Frankenstein who's pretending to be experimenting but really just looking for a daughter.

Loved GN & GL. Anyways, sounds about what I figured for both. I enjoy some Nolan stuff, and don't have beef with him, but he whiffs a lotta shit imo. You pointed out a big one for me: the glazing over of certain shit. But the sob gave us Dark Knight. It cost us having to hear Bales awful Batvoice, but I don't wear hockey pads.
