every time i see an ad for "we created an expansion for D&D 5e where you [do something that D&D 5e was not built to do]" the part of my brain that hates D&D gets louder
you don't need a "studio ghibli vibes setting for D&D 5e". you don't need "historical settings for D&D 5e". you need to open your minds to better games
The DnD-ification of everything is exhausting. I think broadly for most people isn't just the entry point into ttrpgs, it's the ONLY ttrpg. Maybe some of the hip ones have heard about Pathfinder
Using D&D rules for anything besides D&D has always been bonkers to me. I don’t think there’s a set of game mechanics that can do it all but D&D is lowwwww on the list of system flexibility
I'm perpetually exhausted hearing about players who end up playing DnD because they "don't want to learn something new" and frankly I don't think most players actually particularly know how to play DnD! Most player's experiences tends to be a few surface level mechanics interpreted into the rules through the DM, meaning almost anything with a character sheet of some kind can slot right in! And worse yet, the things you DO have to learn in DnD tend to be crunchy mechanical minutia that makes people think all TTRPGs are "complicated".
I tried making this argument to my friends but we ended up going back to dnd anyway and I wanna scream lmao
I've been GMing for my friend group for years, and we settled on D&D because it's a) a D20 based fantasy Game, b) its less number crunchy than i.e. Pathfinder and c) half my players wanted to play D&D specifically.
I personally enjoy it, and it's a good fit for my group, but I get the frustrations with people trying to use the system for something else.
For example if you want a studio Ghibli rpg, tales from Myriad is currently available still in beta and I highly recommend it as a fascinating setting and character builder currently
