Some photos from last weekend - because I'd let the day get away from me a bit and honestly forgot quite how early the sun comes down this time of year was an exercise in making the most of challenging light but got some good stuff. The heron was a bit of a gift - saw it holed up in this little heavily shaded hollow and was dubiously trying to see if I could find an acceptable combo of ISO and shutter speed when suddenly the sun passed by a single break in the line of trees behind me, basically casting a spotlight right on the heron...

Also it's Weird Duck Time (h/t Rosemary Mosco)! In addition to the goldeneye pictured with his impressive catch also saw several buffleheads, though wasn't able to get any great photos of them. Always a nice marker of the season seeing our migratory winter friends arrive.

Species shown: Common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) Great blue heron (Ardea herodias)
