Since everyone's talking about Dune again which as always includes talking about how stupid and/or "unrealistic" the names are, I'll say it again: At least as far as realism goes, that complaint kind of falls apart when you look at how names actually work through history.

There are names that are common today that were common in their cultural context of origin a thousand years ago or more. There are names that are common today that existed but were unusual that long ago, and vice versa. There are names in use today that are of recent coinage that would have been totally unrecognizable that long ago. There are names that existed as words but would not usually be used as personal names back in the day. And there are older names that have come back around today that would have sounded old-fashioned at various intervening points in the past.

Having a mix of unrecognizable space names, familiar "modern" names, and names that are familiar but sound silly or outdated is maybe one of the most realistic things about Herbert's worldbuilding and I'm tired of pretending it's not...
