I think in every generation there's a certain kind of weird kid who misattributes their alienation as being generational, and latches on to the pop culture from a generation or so earlier because "everything was better back then," a sort of received nostalgia for an imagined golden age you weren't there for but are sure must have existed.
And if you were one of those kids there's a real weird double vision watching today's crop of those kids latching on to the very time period you were rejecting in favor of an earlier one when you were doing the same thing....
