does anyone else get mad when people blame rats for the bubonic plague especially since the latest historiography you've read indicates that scholars now think its more likely the primary drivers of plague at the time were rich people traveling between places

people always want to blame the cute little scurrying things but it always turns out to be a rich white person thus making scooby doo the most accurate documentary ever.

I thought it was about eating marmots. By which I mostly just mean I like the marmot-eating theory, about which my understanding was that this was more that "the Mongols' existing fondness for snacking on marmots combined with their rise to imperial power meant that like ordinary soldiers ended up eating marmots in far-off-to-them places that carried plague strains", and that "rich people traveling" might not encompass aspects of the spread and does not necessarily imply a louche and idle tourism.

although certainly the tastes of the new elite who had grown up as humble footsoldiers probably drove a trade in marmots, so the basal complaint could still be perfectly valid

I hate to be that guy but you've got me mortally curious now: what historiography was it? It's not that I don't believe that rich people are of course the driver but I would love to read about the history
