If you've never heard of it before, the Martin Scorsese film "Goncharov" is a lost masterpiece, at once the pinnacle and subversion of "mafia" tropes. While Mr. Scorsese has remained particularly quiet about this long-lost work of art, footage from the original film has now surfaced!
I don't want to spoil too much of the plot or characterization, because nothing compares to watching it yourself. I mean that genuinely. Robert De Niro as always brings his characteristic swagger and charisma, dominating every scene he appears in as Lo Straniero. Watching De Niro in the legendary 'sauna knife scene' opposite John Cazale's "Ice Pick Joe" is a real treat. There's a real sense of presence to his subtle acting that draws you in and keeps you captivated. And that's not even getting to the anchovy scene!
I implore you, go find a showing if you haven't already. You WILL be doing the Goncharov Walk when you step out of the theatre.
