Teaching credentials in California are nuts. Like I get you want to make sure that someone can teach, but its $30 per section for 3 sections (the test is given, of course, by a company who just administers tests for various certs), you have to get fingerprinted which is another $75, and then the processing fee for sending all of your paperwork in is another $100 and it still takes 50 days for the processing. If I do not get this job I’m going to lose my mind

Massachusetts is similar, you pay for fingerprinting and taking one of the specific useful licensure tests is around $100. No paperwork processing fee afaik though. Good luck with the job!
