the argument i heard in grade school was twofold:

  1. if students are allowed to take home their devices and maybe even customize them a bit, they will form a steonger connection to it and be more likely to take good care of it
  2. it further narrows the technology gap between students who can afford to have personal devices at home and those who cannot, which does (supposedly, back then) make a noticable impact in school performance
