I pay the minimum and ask my cable providers what happened. Apparently not only does my usual payment site not specify how much I need to pay at minimum, but their emails have been getting bounced back for who-knows-how-long, so I never receive a notification about what's due and when. Which according to them is my fault, despite me calling them a month ago for the exact same reason and not being told about these emails failing.
Also I now owe $50 more in addition to anything else coming up because they had to turn it on again. Just like last month.

So my only options are to set up an arrangement with them where they take out however much they feel they need to zero my balance (which I clearly can't afford), or to repeat this song-and-dance every month. Great.

These companies are monopolies and they behave like them.

I cut out cable years ago, I just wasn't using it. But internet is practically a utility like running water.

It really feels like it, even though there are technically two major providers in my area. The other one is much worse, though.

The cable is mostly a holdover from a plan started years ago - it'd cost more to change it at this point. I use cable like once a week.

If it's in the US, they have to tell you how much is owed. They're also legally required to have clear communications on how much is owed and when it's due. If you can prove they're engaging in this, report them for consumer fraud. Once you've done that, call them tell them you've reported them for consumer fraud and your next step is to take them to court. I find that usually opens up the conversation in your favor.
