Toucharcade is a fascinating website in that it was probably one of the best of the old-school mobile game coverage sites and survived the complete decimation of that industry (via apple and google removing referral links) by making a pivot to patreon at a time that absolutely no one was even considering such a thing, and then further pivoting to including Switch coverage when the mobile industry had stratified into a thing that was difficult to even write coverage for.
Like most games press sites, the contraction of the industry forced them into more and more listicles and less investigative coverage, but even if their modern output isn't - couldn't be - what it was during the 2010-13 mobile boom, I was glad they existed because they truly were alone in their space, for such a long time. Mobile games is a hard beat. The developers and publishers don't want you. The platform holders don't want you. Much of the audience doesn't want you. Who are you even writing for? I wonder if they ever settled on an answer.
The journalism space continues to contract with their loss. I wonder if we'll ever see those holes filled.
