It started as a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fansite and the Whedon has never come out, it's like cigarette smoke in wallpaper

This is true, but the reason it's still a popular thing to edit and why I am even a fairly regular editor comes down to hyperfixations.

Turns out a site about organizing elements of a story into quantifiable elements you can list in categories makes you REALLY satisfied when your brain just kind of likes organizing things and talking for long lengths on Thing.

I stay far away from YMMV and more opinionated pages, that's where people become insufferable and the truly incomprehensible troper talk explodes forth.

i think about this sometimes, and i think the best way to figure out their mindset is that their trope suggestion area is (was?) called "You Know That Thing Where". it is, by and large, a community built of people who just really like when a given thing happens in their favorite piece of media, want to explain why they think it's cool, and are met with kindred spirits who can think of other times that thing happens.

maybe over time it's flip-flopped into a way for people to (sometimes badly) criticize media for lack of originality, but as the site itself sometimes stresses, "tropes aren't bad."
