I plan on staying here but yeah, I think the honeymoon period is over (as someone I follow stated earlier).
The leftover scars of how social media works has caused a lot of people to just be The Worst and this site's one major flaw of not having more moderators means there isn't really a structure on the side of staff to actually combat this or subtly push people away from gross behavior like ban evades, making light of people complaining about racism (I'm choosing to look at that recent headassery in a more forgiving light but that bozo is blocked and silenced), or just general toxic behavior.
Even old forums understood you needed more than one person enforcing rules and general conduct. I understand the financial reasons, but this does need to be addressed, partly because it's extremely bad for the overall health of the community and the culture, and partly because it alienates us POC and such when we see this stuff in popular tags with nobody doing anything about it (or, as we recently saw, certain people trying to clog the mentions of users with gross stuff).
For the user's side of things, I think one important thing to keep in mind is to use this site for what you want to use it for and not what social media has trained us to use it for. Post about your hobbies, thoughts on things you like, share some criticism or some thing you thought was cool - like, just using online to have fun in general, and maybe use the tag system for venting in a way that let's people disengage with that if they wish. If stronger words are necessary, let them be necessary, but if you feel slighted by such posts, maybe just vent in an untagged post or something and not spread it out into the wider ecosystem.
I do not want to be making a post about any of this, I normally just use my account for things I actually enjoy because I have enough stress in my life, but I'm in my 30s now, and I have seen what this sort of behavior leads to time and time again. It has to be addressed, we have to actually act in a manner that reflects what we want the tone of the site to be, and the staff needs to up their moderating game alongside. I would rather not see this place rot because people can't self-reflect on their behavior, or react like clowns and children to POC explaining things about race and frustrations they have with that reality.
TL;DR: White people, calm down. Everyone else, consider what you post in popular tags and if that is or is not what you wish to send out into the wider site culture. Also, staff needs to hire more mods or come up with some sort of other solution.
