the funny thing is that it's a mechanism of my forum; if you fail to log in 5 times, you get ip banned with a message saying "contact [emial] for password recovery", because we have no automated method of doing it (emails are not required)

it's just that if you send me a message on discord it will get lost. i have message requests from months ago sitting in here because i just do not check them and do not care

one of the places I play has had a no-slur rule since like 2015 despite being full of Gamers, and the reason given (besides the obvious) is that if you're the kind of person who can't (or more importantly, won't) go a 30 minute game without dropping the N-bomb after being explicitly instructed not to, then you're 100% the kind of asshole who thinks they're an exception to every other rule and nobody wants to wait around for you to break those too

refusing simple, easy-to-comply instructions is an excellent litmus test to determine that someone isn't worth your time dealing with as a community member

in reply to @amydentata's post:

thinking about my old discord server and the very simple procedure to get past our stringent anti spam barrier: "Introduce yourself."

Things people did besides introduce themselves:

  • Drop slurs.
  • Drop paragraphs about how we're elitist assholes who don't want to grow the community (sometimes with slurs).
  • Start a moderator report ticket asking why they can't send messages. (they can read the instructions on how to start a ticket but not how to get approved?)
  • Attempt to DM the first moderator in the list alphabetically.
  • Leave the server and rejoin multiple times in a few minutes.
  • Go to the message board instead and try to start a bugs thread asking why they're "banned."

It really was that simple to just say, "hi, I'm username, may i have access".
