Lately it feels like a lot of the mixing advice you get on guitars is "keep it dry". I love how the 80s was all like, "yeah, but, reverb and chorus sound rad!"

It's funny, this kind of reminds me of the sound Tupperware Remix Party gets on Together Through Time. Enough so that part of me wonders how much they listened to this artist in particular 😂

I love chorus and reverb and the over-produced 80s sound so much.
I'm also enjoying hearing TWRP for the first time, and you're probably not wrong about Kadomatsu being an influence. Then again (and I say this with love and respect), there's so much happening in their music it'd probably be shorter to make a list of artists who weren't an influence. Thank you for bringing them to my attention!

I haven't had a chance to listen to anything in that Yamashita collection I rebugged from wave, but I'm going to keep this comparison in mind when I finally do.
I only really dug into Casiopea just a couple months ago when I found a similar collection for their discography, but it had some pretty big gaps. They were missing The Party (1990) and I instantly bought a copy off ebay.

I really need to do a deep dive into Casiopea. They keep popping up in connection to my favorite artists so, yeah, prolly time to really take a look.

Funny, the way I actually first found out about them was in connection to Senri Kawaguchi (great drummer, look her up if you haven't). She's in a duo called Kiyo*sen with Kiyomi Otaka. Kiyomi is the keyboardist for Casiopea 3 and 4 so... I had to give them a listen. They've been popping up periodically ever since :D

Heh, we'll see if I can even dig up anymore. We've basically tapped all my good Japanese Jazz Fusion recs 😂

Though I will at least point out, assuming you are a K-on fan, that if you search for it there's a video of 13 year old Senri Kawaguchi doing covers from K-on. Adorable and amazing, lemme tell ya.

Curious if you worked out how to get that particular guitar sound? I set up a chain that goes like:

Epiphone LP, 100% bridge pickup -> BluGuitar (Marshall Stack) full 80s hi gain distortion -> Keeley Compressor -> Ableton -> high pass EQ around 150hz -> Stereo delay, 5ms left, 20ms right, 10% feedback, 70% wet -> chorus (ensemble setting), 25% wet -> plate reverb (Large Plate, 1.5s), 100% IR, 1.6 second tail, 18% wet

(There's a bunch of other settings, but I just listed the major ones)

It sounds closeish? But I wondered if there was anything obvious missing from all of this that you perhaps knew about.

Also, I looked at Kadomastsu's custom guitar. Man, there is nothing more City Pop than that thing: https://www.moon-guitar.co.jp/kadomatsu/index.html

It looks like it has a humbucker on the bridge, so I figure I am probably safe with my Les Paul. My tone is considerably darker, but that's mostly because I didn't want to change around my amp's EQ settings because they are dialed in for a warmer sound for other projects atm :D.

Anyway, if you have any thoughts I'd love to hear 'em. It's def a different guitar tone than I normally work with so I'm curious about it.

I have no input to offer here because you're speaking way over my head, lol -- sorry😅 I don't play the guitar (I'd very much like to!) and have very little music production knowledge (ditto previous). I just know when I like what I hear!

I've just started listening to it as my work music and it's so good!! I need to go hunt down proper albums/artists and not just compilations from YouTube (the easiest work computer option)

lol, that's literally why my lazy ass is posting this 😂. I do plan to hunt down the artist from teh songs I like in the mixes I listen to, but I also figured, hey, I bet there are folks around who know some great artists so I should just ask 😄

Yagami Junko's "Communication" is like...wow, I love this. It's just one amazing song after another 0_0. Any other albums similar to that one that you might recommend?

Sunshower wasn't bad, btw, but what I heard felt a bit lower energy to me and I'm more looking for high energy right now. I have Ohnuki Taeko on my "when I next need to chill" list for now.

lol, wow I spoke to soon on Sunshower! I’ll admit I just listened to part of the first two songs, turns out the 4th song “Summer Connection” is one of my favorites and the rest of the album is amazing. Teach me to comment before giving the album a full look 😆
