To me the real paradox of wanting to make a game when you can't draw is that you end up wanting to find someone to help by drawing for your game. But in order to feel comfortable asking something like that, you first have to know how to make a game. But to do that you need to practice soooo....

I know, the answer is "buy some assets" or "use a character generator, like in RPG Maker, which you own...you twit."

I suppose really what I'm trying to do at this point is let go of the idea that any game I make is going to look nice. Look, I can't draw, so my game is only going to look as good as a character/asset/gen/store thingy is gonna make it look.

...

But so help me god the music is gonna be amazing.

You can go the Ryushiki07 way.

When They Cry visual novels are seen as some of the best out there, but they all started with (or only have) art that some people might find bad. The ones with "updated" art only had it with their PS3 port.

I also think having your own art instead of assets can only be good for your story (at least for characters; buildings and stuff have enough variety in RPG Maker to not need to be absolutely replaced).

Not sure if that's what would work for you, but that's my approach to game-making.

plenty of premade assets look fine! there are tons of great pixel art assets on itch, for example, and i would use them myself if it wasn't for the fact that i really want to improve my pixel art skills.

there are lots of well-received games out there that are full of stock art assets too. super auto pets uses google noto emoji, skyborn and demon king chronicle use stock rpgmaker assets, getting over it and phasmophobia are built out of stock 3D art assets, and a billion games use oryx's 16-bit fantasy sprites, such as quest of dungeons, keeperRL, dungeonUp and the dungeon beneath. those games all look fine to me, so i'm sure you'll be able to make a nice looking game, even with stock art.

You....make an entire series of excellent point there 😆. I'll have to look into the oryx stuff for sure. 16bit is def the vibe I'm going for and, as a result, I've been a little unsure of RPG Makers 48pixel character height.

Well, that said, it's not like it looks awful either. And you did point out that folks definitely use the stock assets and make good games. Maybe step one should just be worrying about learning RPGMaker as that will probably be enough without getting too much into looking for other assets...
