big agree, this is a good opinion! infinite scroll preys on addictive patterns for brains to follow, like how tiktok just keeps going and going. the fact that mind games have been monetized is frightening
i've been interested in psychology for a long time, if only to really understand all the ways in which our brains are profoundly fucked up and all the ways people abuse it
you see it in casinos here (i live near las veags); there's never any views of the outdoors, no clocks, etc.
so true! wow yeah, these tricks have been going forever, in different forms, and not just an inevitability of the internet.
any sort of culture or tradition is intentional and a lot of times the folks that put themselves in charge of platforms can't handle that responsibility to their users (especially if they uphold a responsibility to non-users/shareholders higher)

The only infinite scrolling I support is temple run
My favourite thing about infinite scroll is that it can't:
- tell you where you are in scrollback in a meaningful way
- keep your place in scrollback
- even keep the words you're reading on screen most of the time
also items that are off the screen are culled from the document tree at unpredictable times so find-in-page can't find words that you know are there.
Pagination is good but I think we should also have “show X posts per page” type settings for it, though.
Another nice thing about pages is that you can change the number at the end of the URL and go deep-diving into the past which is a lot easier than having to scroll into the past
