I don't mind if the stuff to buy is at least cool! D&D 3.5 and 5e lock all the cool shit away to GM Fiat, while 4e lets you actually save up your money as part of your progression.

But in most games it's not! All the cool shit must be quested for, which is fun, but it takes away the helpfulness of treasure and, by extension, the Treasure Hunter archetype.

3.5 absolutely has a money progression by level chart that's basically expected. Even before 4E a ton of groups ran it as that and it was boring because if you didn't spend your money on Basic Shit then you just couldn't keep up.
