strongly considering becoming one of those people who insists on never referring to a particular thing by its common name for political reasons because framing big probability models as "artificial intelligence" and pretending they're anything like HAL 9000 or Data is doing so so much damage to laypeople's understanding of a technology that primarily exists to make their lives worse

got to ban a terf today. felt great

@jkap

changing our admin UI to have a big "get this clown off my website" button that does all the ban-relevant actions at once was a great idea b/c it's so much more fun now

@beholdnec

Holy crap, you can just ban terfs? You can just..... do that?

You don't have to shrink and hesitate, waffling around, being all like "Sure this person basically celebrates mass murders, and sure they're basically telling people to send bomb threats to this children's hospital..... but I dunno.... it would make other terfs mad..... I really wanna keep them..... I just don't know!!"

You can just ban them?

Just like that?

You can just do it??

jkap
@jkap

yeah it's fun as hell. everyone should try it some time

one of the cautionary lectures i got in church as a teenager was from a guy who said that he knew a business executive who discovered porn in his 40s, and thoughts of porn filled all of his neural pathways until he was no longer smart enough to be an executive, so he had to become a construction worker instead.

Webster
@Webster

the hardest part of this story for me to believe now is that there are executives smarter than construction workers.

is there a word that means something like "nationalization", except that multiple nations purchase the thing & fund its development (e.g. a company that develops some intellectual property, in part so that the IP could be made public-domain)?

it might have been called "internationalization", but...

[ checks definition ]

oh wait, the second one almost fits: "the action or process of bringing a place under the protection or control of two or more nations."

also: what companies would you recommend as potential candidates for this type of internationalization? (Off the top of my head: moderna; arm; wolfram research.)
