The excellent Trash Theory series on the new British canon brought me back around to the video for Firestarter this week. The way Flint dances and poses brought two thoughts to my 2023 head: one was the comparison to Sherrie Silver's excellent choreography for Childish Gambino in the video for This Is America. The second is that, despite being perceived by the musical establishment of the UK in the 90s as a hostile and aggressive figure, there is a lot of femininity on display in the way Flint moves.
