I'm a bit baffled by the fandom myself even though I'm a part of it; I used to read nuclear-project documents during bouts of insomniac hyperfixation and I'm sure in good company when it comes to that pastime.
but I know at least one reason for my continued interest: I'm accident-prone myself and liable to make bad impulsive decisions and therefore I feel like, in reading about nuclear (and other) accidents, I'm reading about myself.
