I think when people hear "write your own engine" they imagine a situation where they're writing specific code for each platform just to create a window and an OpenGL (or whatever 3D rendering API) context and then hooking into the message pipe and yadayadayada. I absolutely do not recommend you go around calling CreateWindowEx and doing all of that manually.
There are great free and open source libraries available to do that shit for you. SDL2, RayLib, and many other smaller and less known libraries. I use RayLib in my fantasy console project and I gave the source to a friend who, with almost no alterations, managed to get it running on a Raspberry Pi. This is a solved problem. You don't gotta do this.
for context, the og 'nintendo hire this man' guy constantly takes models, textures, and even scripting, to retool into his projects with almost never providing lasting credit or bothering to understand their innerworkings, & regularly states that he does every aspect himself.

this clip is from over five years ago. he has never clarified that the work here was not his own, or acknowledged the attribution license tied to it that requests attribution to be readily provided.
if a creator were to try to do anything about it and requires him to remove content with it if he won't provide attribution, it would simply be perceived as nintendo silencing yet another innocent creator, and popular news outlets eat this stuff up no matter how little skill or respectful conduct is actually demonstrated.
