In comparison, look at some gameplay from the penultimate level of Marathon:

A bit different as far as pace goes, eh?

No, it's more like Escape from Tarkov. The game loop is basically:

  • You select your equipment
  • You enter a match
  • A match is made with N other players
  • You and N other players all spawn into a map at once (often at the edges)
  • You and N other players scavenge for loot, fighting for it if it's worth it
    • Good loot would be at the center, or in buildings to facilitate player interactions
  • You leave when you feel like you have enough, or it's too dangerous
    • If you survive, you keep the stuff
    • If you die, you lose everything you were carrying (and other players get to take it from your body)
