But do I have the time to play it?
Oh for SURE watch it, you won't play it. It's not a fun game to play, like, physically. The story spoilers aren't even things you'd fully piece together on a first-run unless you were dogged about it.
Plus, Bone Totem is much better overall - but I strongly recommend both videos.
Love me some MandaloreGaming. :D
Every time I watch it, I'm awed by how he managed to turn "reviews random retro games" into something that draws millions of views. STASIS is two weeks old now and at 700K.
Bone Totem came out 3 days ago and it's already at 470k, but it does depend on the game - Legion: TLoE is 1mo old and only just breaking 580k, but Ring, a 1.5hr descent into madness, 2.5mil.
I think because it's both actually a review, without ever needing to resort to scores or other terrible metrics, it's a review that actually does review all the major elements of a game, but it's also a well-crafted entertainment experience that almost always serves as an enhancer to the enjoyment of a game, not a wholesale replacement. Unless the game is trash, then it's more of a 'watch instead of playing' kind of situation.
Plus, making something that is second-monitor quality background noise w/ a good voice+mic is a surefire way to get repeat watches out of the same viewers (me, I am the same viewers.)
I watched the video and now I'm plot-sated, thank you :D
But yes, he gives a thorough look, which helps a lot.
Maybe I'll mainline Marathon next. I'm sure I'll miss out on getting all the best Durandal bits organically, but, like... it doesn't look like an FPS I'd find that exciting.
Do iiiit. The Marathon videos (and the Pathways into Darkness video which counts as a Marathon video) are very well made, very interesting, and very entertaining.
You'll also get a great treat if you don't bother playing the games: instead of reading snippets of Durandal lore in terminals between archaic and long-since-improved gameplay that doesn't, IMO, provide any real satisfaction bar 'I finished an Old Game!' life achievements, Durandal in Mandy's videos is narrated by a superb voice actor that makes all of his input 1000x better than it ever was in the games themselves.
You'd miss out if you played the games and didn't watch his videos. You won't miss out by just watching those vids, IMO. :D
Perfect, thank you. I got into reading lparchive partially because I wanted to know the plot/lore of various zany JRPGs without having to actually play them!
