MG34, actually. If you look at the IMFDB page, then the -34 conversion is so lazy, you may not even call it a conversion, but then again, -34 is deffo less well-known than the -42.
I wonder how entrenched in the popular conciousness were Sterlings when the original Star Wars came out. Surely they didn't have the same clout that AKs have.

I think the main reason they used the guns they did was that they were cheap to get in bulk, but it gave them real heft and, y'know, they did greeble them up

this show was on Disney, this was the most "actual AK" they could have gotten away with.

We were hoping they would be actual slug throwers since they exist in the fiction but sadly they were just blasters. I thought it would be a good opportunity to show that Stormtrooper armor wasn't totally useless if they were impervious to the guns they had
I think the dream of Stormtrooper armor will always remain that, a dream. In the movie land, armor ain't shit unless they're introducing Armored Dudes, The Special Dudes You Can't Just Shoot.
IMFDB has example of guns from the OT and outside of the MG34, they put in a lot more work to disguise the original gun. You can do hard-scrabble militia without going for the one hard-scrabble militia gun.
