something i really appreciate about dragon ball/dbz is showing the characters grow and change. goku starts as a little kid and ends up as a grandpa with kids and a grandchild. im not sure i can think of another franchise that showed that kind of actual growth from a child to their grandchildren. closest off the top of my head is star wars
Wouldn't have to move historical events in character backstories either. Whoever takes Skinner's place could be a Gulf War vet. Or not even a veteran at all.
