They have been making games for THIRTY YEARS.

THIRTY YEARS.

They're the biggest miniature manufacturer in the world.

But apparently writing competent rules is still a bridge too far.

Absolute fucking smooth brains.

They're already shown that they can't do competing loadouts without point costs in Kill Team et al.

Even as far back as AoS 1E, they a Sigmarine unit that could, 1 per 3 guys, take Starsoul Maces. What do those do? Deal unsavable damage, no hit roll required. Hmm, you think someone would forego that for a regular weapon?

And they haven't improved since! Aaaargh!

Maybe one day, I'll stop liking Warhammer as a universe and be free.

This is a reason they're rebranding to "Warhammer"

Also, I think about 10yrs ago a stock holder or investor meeting minutes or report got found/leaked, and GW execs basically told the investors the only reason the games are made is to market the models. Sort of like how 80/90s cartoons (e.g. transformers) were only made as vehicles to sell the toys.

I personally love 5th & 6th edition, for the shear amount of customisation that can be done, even if I didn't get a chance to properly play 6th, but sadly some armies literally have no good,/consistent options against certain things (e.g. Tyranids struggle Vs heavy armour vehicles like Land Raiders). /Tangent

I'm not trying to be snarky, but it seems like you grouse about Warhammer most of the time I see your posts about it pop up in my feed. I'm a relatively new player to both 40K and Heresy so I don't doubt that I lack the perspective that you have, but maybe you could consider trying out other game systems with your playgroup? I know a lot of folks that want the mechanics of older editions have had a good time going to OPR, and there's of course nobody preventing you from playing the older editions themselves. There are other systems designed to work with your existing miniature collections too like Turnip28 or Trench Crusade. Maybe look into those? I haven't totally lost faith in Games Workshop to make interesting mechanics & models, but if I did, I would go to alternatives.

I run a podcast about indie games (60a+ episodes) and I joke that I wouldn't have one if GW rules were any good.

Trouble is, I got sucked into the the Warhammer 40K universe as a wee lad and it has had its hooks in me ever since (I also complain about lore, btw).

I have played at least a single game of
Rogue Trader
3E
8E
7E kill team
Kill Team 1E
Kill Team 2E
Shadow War Armageddon
Battlefleet Gothic
Epic 40K
Warmaster
Horus Heresy 1E
Horus Heresy 2E
Age of Sigmar (1E? 2E?)
Adeptus Titanicus...

GW is just incapable of making a good non-specialist game. HH1 was probably the best iteration of their mainline rules, but that's because it had far fewer armies to juggle.

HH2E improved it in some regards, but didn't go far enough (Breach is a good example of understanding that their armor save system sucks, but they're too chicken to axe it) while also cutting away some of the charm (Legion rules have no downsides).

I want to play cool Space Marines with minimal effort, and that would be with GW writing good rules, so their inability to do so gets in my way alot.
