You have horror stories so old they predate OSR - when the O was the only S and needed no R - of GMs pitching a fit that the players won.
A GM wins not by beating the players, but by presenting a challenge to the players that, by the end, is so good that the players will never shut up about it to anyone that will listen.
How that meshes with ideas like Tucker's kobolds, I don't quite know.
