Another thing that guarantees character immortality is having a miniature (and rules). Geedubs can't just have a historical [dead] character on the roster that they update the rules and miniature for. People will still play their favorite bastard even if he's dead and especially if he has good rules - just release them as a dual-kit with generic HQ like they're doing with everything these days.
