The three-day special military operation is now losing BTR-50s, first made in 1952 and not manufactured after 1970.

BTR-50 was replaced in service by BMP-1s.

BMP-1s was replaced by BMP-2s.

BMP-2 was supposed to be replaced by BMP-3s.

Fun fact: according to Perun, in February-April 2022, BMP-1s made up only 12% of Russian BMP-1/2/3 losses. In May-August 2023, BMP-1 share of losses went to 44%.

So with BMP-3 share being mostly stable, this shows that BMP-2s are becoming extinct, with more and more troops getting showed into BMP-1s.

And now they're down to BTR-50s that BMP-1s replaced!

That is, a budget plane the US wouldn't afraid to export.

It was initially a privately funded Northrop-Grumman project, too!

A much-improved version called F-20 Tiger Shark was floated in 1970s, by which time it had to compete with the F-16 - and it couldn't!

But it wasn't for sexy reasons like F-16 being that much more capable. No, USAF had gone balls-deep into the F-16 buy and everyone saw that it was the plane - about as capable if more expensive - that would have support for years to come.

The Bretonnia reveal yesterday presented another batch of new character models (even if it hurts me to call a banner-bearer a character), a single new actual unit, and which kits will be returning when Warhammer: The Old World launches in early 2024.

So, the returning unit kits are:

  • Pegasus Knights
  • Knights of the Realm/Errant
  • Men-at-Arms
  • Peasant Bowmen
  • Field Trebuchet, which returns in a hell of its own because it has been redone in resin. Forge World resin. Which means not only working with a material only slightly less annoying than metal, but also baying $FW for formerly-metal kit that came out in 6th edition.

Alongside these new and returning kits which form the bulk (or entirety) of your force, there will also be a selection of returning metal heroes and specialist units that will be available to order direct from games-workshop.com.

Considering how long Kirby's GW let Bretonnian range languish, we're going to see some UGLY metal motherfuckers rubbing square bases with the fanciest plastic kits GW can produce.

Sheesh!
