Ask me about Etrian Odyssey, Tunic, Fire Emblem, and/or Pokemon. I can and will nerd out about them.

In Star Trek lore, it is absolutely possible, and even EASY, to use plastic surgery to change your appearance so much you appear to be another species. There are multiple episodes where a character is kidnapped and surgically altered against their will, and they wake up appearing as a Romulan or a Cardassian or something.

This means it would, in fact, be EXTREMELY easy for someone to get surgery and turn themselves into their fursona. If Star Trek was not cowards, we'd be seeing a bunch of animal people walking around alongside everyone else. Not to mention all the other extreme cosmetic changes, like, y'know, goblinization cough cough.

However, this does not happen. This is because Star Trek writers are cowards. However, there has to be some kind of in lore reason, because logically, we know for a fact that people would do this. This leads me to the theory that furries are illegal in the Federation. At some point in the past, something EXTREMELY BAD happened, and now being a furry is EXTREMELY illegal. I like to imagine the Furry Wars were bloody, and there's a lot of bad blood. Also note when I say furry, I mean like, the humans. Yes, cat people exist. That doesn't count, cause they were already cat people (though I bet there's some Caitian out there who wants plastic surgery to be a Human.

So, my theory is that all the furries in the Federation are A) in jail. Or B) Exiled to some far off planet, sectioned off so no one can go there. You can just find a forgotten planet floating in the cosmos FILLED with furries. A nonstop furry con.

Lower Decks writers, fucking hire me. This is an episode idea or two waiting to happen.

You remember correctly! Though the Eugenics Wars was entirely about genetic manipulation. Turning yourself INTO a cat through genetic shenanigans? Totally illegal. But plastic surgery is not illegal in the Trek Universe, and there's nothing genetics-related about that. So I think they wouldn't be related, but some other sparking situation.

They made a big deal about Bajoran Earrings violating the dress code at one point. Maybe some incredibly inflexible bureaucrat didn't want to have to create an exemption form comprehensive enough to cover all possible uniform alterations based on fursonas, so they just banned furries to make it simpler.

Maybe there are furries in the Star Trek universe but just not in Star Fleet. There's also barely any tattoos (except for Chakotay's culturally important one), piercings, or wild dyed hair colors. It's a conservative place!

This has gotten me thinking about body modification generally. In civilian spaces with such advanced medical technology we should be seeing some wild experimentation.

If it's so easy to modify your body does it become less important to you? A big part of getting a tattoo is that it is permanent (ish), but it wouldn't be in Star Trek's universe. But then you would expect people to change tattoos like they do clothes.

Would getting a surgery to look like another species be taboo? Like I can see people wanting to get elf ears, but then that would look like you're trying to imitate Vulcans or Romulans. If there are cat people, maybe they find it offensive for humans to try to look like them?

messy diplomatic incident with a [insert animal species here] furry and a alien planet that coincidentally looked like said species would be a good episode (accusations of espionage? A hilarious misunderstanding of why the furry was wearing a collar?)
