They say I'm "high-functioning autistic" but some days I feel like I'm "medium-functioning" at best, if that's even a term. I mean, I can talk, consistently, I guess that's what they mean, but experience has made it very clear that I am a few cards short of a whole deck in terms of social instincts and overstim problems and executive dysfunction and a whole host of other things.

My usual rant about being "high functioning" is that it is a term applied by medical people to say that they recognize that you are having very noticable trouble but they are okay with just letting you suffer because you produce enough proverbial value for the system.

"-functioning" labels are pretty useless as best, and harmful at worst.

Existing as an autistic person/critter is often difficult and exhausting, even if a neurotypical doctor has assigned you the label of "pretty convincing at pretending to not be autistic"

One reason I rarely talk about autism is the relatively recent collapse of all variation into "autism spectrum disorder". And most social media these days has at least a small but vocal crew of "autism is not a disability" types that I really wish would fuck off into the sun.

To be fair I think the whole "autism is not a disability" thing partially exists for "PLEASE do not revoke my autonomy" reasons.

Like, many right-wingers insist on arguing that autistic people are not of-sound-mind enough to choose to transition, even as adults, for instance.
