Ok so like, I like sweet vermouth but I think mulled wine tastes like wiper fluid? What's up with that, have I just only had bad mulled wine
Maybe? This may be my first mulled wine so with N=1 I guess it's most comparable to sweet vermouth in my mind. Definitely not getting wiper fluid notes on this though.
I have only heard the expression but never the actual act it came from
how did you do it
also what did you do
The basic idea is to take red wine, warm it (simmer or less) with some whole spices, and add sweetener to taste. I used a mugful of red wine (put it in the mug and then poured it into the saucepan), 4-6 whole cloves, 4-6 whole allspice, some orange peel (you could use a slice of orange if you like), an inch of cinnamon stick, and a big spoonful of honey. I warmed all of that for about 15 minutes, then poured it through a strainer into my mug!
The recipe I've seen is:
Obviously I'm not making drinks for 25 people (a gallon of wine is about 5 bottles of wine) which is why I went with the mug/some ratio haha.
ohhhh thank you, that's super neat! :O
...does that mean "I'll mull it over" has always meant "I'll take that thought and simmer it with some spices"?
I suspect it's more that both meanings come from a similar place, but maybe so?
