I often open my cupboard and go, "I have a lot of tea and coffee".
And then promptly buy more when I am out.
"This one has a slightly more intense bergamot scent. Like it isn't that much from the other tin I bought last week but it is enough to not leave without it."
I have a white2tea tab open this very moment with some samples upon your recommendation
oop yep and they emailed me today about new oolongs. I'm trying to be responsible over here but
yeahhhhhhh...order placed over here. more black and puer though, I am sampling to see whether my palate has warmed up to puer yet
mostly some puers that were described as sweet or approachable, a couple solid black teas, and some hearth tieguanyin. also a pretty bandana!
Oh that's really cute! I've been thinking about getting a gaiwan for a while now, what kinds of tea do you think work best with it?
Trivially, you can brew whatever the heck you want in it. More seriously, I tend to use mine for teas farther away from "teabag tea": oolong, puerh, fancier white teas. Things that do well being brewed over and over and over to see how they change.
I generally use a one-serving (300 mL or so) French press for my other tea-brewing needs, and I definitely also do oolong/puerh/whites in that too when I'm in a "mug of tea" mood. Gaiwan is (to me) for sitting down and having a luxurious tea session experience.
Beyond that, larger tea (physically larger) works better because the leaves can't escape through the cocked lid, so generally you'd want to brew higher grades of tea in there (higher than, say, Lipton et al). That said, it's awfully nice to have a tea strainer as well to catch any errant leaf bits before they end up in your cup.
thank you for the recs! Yeah a gaiwan sounds like a "take a moment to enjoy your tea" thing and less like a "I just need caffeine fuel right now"
I'll see if I pick up one for the holidays (or I'll start nagging Spouse to make one at the pottery studio)
My usual tray is a smallish rectangular bamboo one with one of the Dipper constellations carved into it. I don't think Friday Afternoon Tea (fridaytea.com) has any in stock right now, but they're where I got mine.
the problem is you (i) run out of a particular type of tea and then have to re-up on that, when really you (i) should be drinking the others languishing in the cupboard
